Is It In You?
“Make a tree good and its fruit will be good, or make a tree bad and its fruit will be bad, for a tree is recognized by its fruit. You brood of vipers, how can you who are evil say anything good? For the mouth speaks what the heart is full of. A good man brings good things out of the good stored up in him, and an evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in him. But I tell you that everyone will have to give account on the day of judgment for every empty word they have spoken. For by your words you will be acquitted, and by your words you will be condemned.” (Matthew 12:33-37)
The key word here is “make” – We make ourselves a good tree with good fruit or a tree with bad fruit… in fact, we can try to hide that we are a bad tree, but our fruit will always give us away. So what is our fruit? Our fruit seems to be what Jesus was talking about when He says that we will be judged by the words we use. Have you ever said something that you wished you could take back? That’s really not a “loose lips” or “control your mouth problem” – it’s deeper than that. Jesus says it is from either the good or the evil we have stored up in us! That means we have the choice to store good or evil up in us. Spoiler alert: because we are born with a nature to sin, our default will always be prone to evil. That means we will have to desire to store up good in us and that is a daily task we either decide to take up or ignore. If we ignore our call to store up good in us, we will have plenty of evil around us that is waiting to fill our heart. So next time we have a thought or say something that surprises us how evil it is, we should remember the old Gatorade slogan: “Is it in you?” If you asked someone to tell you what kind of fruit you have in your life, what do you think they would say?
